An extremely athletic style of dance, Contemporary training at XBa involves the XBa Method mat workout, technique on and across the floor, and original choreography. Contemporary encompasses methods and technique from a majority of dance styles including Ballet, Jazz, Modern and Lyrical.
XBa School of Dance is the only dance school in BC to offer the committed dancer the International Dance Studies Certification in Contemporary Dance, awarded by UNESCO's International Dance Council. Please see the "Certification Studies" page for more information.
Creative Movement and Contemporary Pointe* are also offered under the Contemporary umbrella.
Classes are offered on Mondays and Thursdays.
*Contemporary Pointe is not being offered for the 2022/23 Season.
Ballet training at XBa is rooted in both the Classical and Vaganova styles. Students are taught the proper vocabulary and terminology starting in Ballet I for early-age dancers.
Our form of Ballet stresses development of strength, flexibility and endurance needed to maintain a proper dance form and to prevent injuries.
Classes are offered on Tuesdays.
Street Dance (Hip Hop & Breakdance)
Hip Hop training at XBa encompasses all traditional styles, from its roots in Harlem in the 1970s as a social dance, to old and new school, to locking, popping and waacking.
Breakdance (or Breaking) is an energetic and acrobatic form of Street Dance, typically involving 4 main elements: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes. Students are taught proper terminology and technique to prevent injuries. Breakdance has been officially inducted into the Olympics, and will make its debut in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Advanced Hip Hop and Breakdance for experienced dancers are offered on Fridays, and Hip Hop for all ability levels is offered on Saturdays.
